As many manufacturers pivot to full battery-electric vehicles, Ford is doubling down on hybrids. The company is now in its fourth generation of the tech that started with the 2005 Ford Escape. The new Escape Hybrid, which comes out in early 2020, will use everything the company has learned in the intervening 15 years. But today we’re checking out the new rear-drive-based, police-spec 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid Pursuit, which will be filling up your rearview mirrors soon. The Blue Oval has already convinced departments to order 1,100 of them, probably because of the savings. See, police officers spend about 60 percent of their time idling -- waiting for you to crest that hill on the highway -- meaning that a hybrid system that can run all the equipment without the engine running will save a ton of cash in gas. Ford figures about $3,500 per year (versus the outgoing 3.7-liter) when gas is $2.75 per gallon. The millennials with the money to buy new cars, anyway. Inspired by the SP Signature concept shown earlier this spring, which effectively previewed a Nissan Kicks-size pocket SUV, the concept shown in the sketch will be revealed later this summer and will go on sale in South Korea and India later this year. The taillights are pincer-shaped and are wrapped around a horizontal bar bisecting the rear hatch. "The robust design character of a traditional SUV coexists with sophisticated exterior design details, such as its long hood; a strong, sophisticated character line on the front bumper; and sharp lines pressed into the bodywork," the … [Read more...] about Kia sketches preview small SUV aimed at millennials
