Last Kingdom is a historical drama series on Netflix and it is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. The series tells the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon), who forms a relationship with Lady of Mercia, Aethelflaed (Millie Brady). In the fourth season Aethelflaed uses the term ‘chaste’, which some fans have mistaken for the word ‘chased’.
What does chaste mean in The Last Kingdom?
One of the major plot twists in the fourth season of The Last Kingdom was when Uhtred and Aethelflaed separated, so Aethelflaed could rule Mercia.
Most of the king’s counsel believed she was not suitable to rule the people of Mercia as she was a woman.
However Uhtred knew how much she wanted to lead her people, and so he gave up his title as ruler of Mercia to let Aethelflaed take over.
In order to earn the trust of her people, she vowed to remain chaste while on the throne to ensure no man can claim power through her.
Fans have mistaken the word for ‘chased’, which has a different meaning entirely.

The term ‘chaste’ is an old English word meaning “abstaining from extramarital, or from all, sexual intercourse”.
Aethelflaed used the term to reassure her people she will not have sex with any man as long as she is the leader of Mercia.
She wanted to ensure she would not be wrongly influenced by any man, and she was capable of making her own decisions.
This, of course, meant she could no longer be in a relationship with Uhtred, which left fans feeling emotional.
But Uhtred has always shown respect for Aethelflaed, and he trusted she had made the right decision.

He vowed as long as she sat on the throne he would always answer Mercia’s call if the people ever needed help.
Uhtred and his loyal band of followers had just helped Aethelflaed and her brother, King Edward (Timothy Innes) free Winchester from the clutches of Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) and Brida (Emily Cox).
Variety spoke to executive producer Nigel Marchant about Uhtred’s decision to hand Mercia over to Aethelflaed.
He said: “I think Uhtred does know his weaknesses at times, and I think part of the journey is realizing the mistakes that he makes.
"Although he is a fabulous leader, he doesn't want to lead a country. He's not a politician and that's not what he wants to do.
“He's always wanted to get back to Bebbanburg and whatever else happens in the country, he doesn't care."

Uhtred’s legacy has always been to claim back Bebbanburg, and he does not want to be stuck in the politics of Mercia.
With this in mind, he agrees to Aethelflaed’s decision to remain chaste while she is on the throne, albeit reluctantly.
Fans were disappointed as they enjoyed seeing the blossoming relationship between Uhtred and Aethelflaed.
They are hoping the pair come together again to unite the kingdoms of England, as Aethelflaed has sworn to do.
One fan said on Twitter: “I really hope they give me more cute moments between Uhtred and Aethelflaed.”
Another fan said: “Man, all I want is for Aethelflaed and Uhtred to be together.”
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, chaste means not having had sex, or only having a sexual relationship with the person you are married to.
In the past, a woman needed to be chaste in order to form a good marriage with her future husband.
Fans have a feeling she may break her oath in a new season of The Last Kingdom, if it gets the green light.
