Lafayette airport passenger count rises in October, on pace to eclipse high mark from 2014
Traffic counts in October at Lafayette Regional Airport were up again, keeping the airport on pace to have its highest passenger count since at least 2010. Airport data shows 23,818 enplanements, or passengers boarding a plane at LFT, in October along with 23,818 deplanements. That puts year-to-date totals at 223,742 enplanements and 217,459 deplanements. Success! An email has been sent with a link to confirm list signup. Error! There was an error processing your request. Both are on pace to eclipse the high-water mark of 2014 when the first 10 months of that year had 208,706 enplanements and 217,459 deplanements, data shows. Construction on the airport's new terminal began in November and is progressing, airport officials said, with no impact on parking or other airport operations. The new terminal, which is being built in an empty area away from the existing terminal, will double the size of the current terminal building.A second security checkpoint will … [Read more...] about Lafayette airport passenger count rises in October, on pace to eclipse high mark from 2014
Auckland bus driver strike: 70,000 passengers to be affected on Monday
STUFF Auckland bus drivers were striking over "management issues" with NZ Bus in February. About 70,000 Auckland commuters are likely to be affected on Monday by a bus driver suspension entering its third day, Auckland Transport (AT) says. More than 100 drivers employed by NZ Bus launched a strike that included letting passengers ride for free last week; those drivers were suspended from work on Saturday. The company operates about 35 per cent of Auckland's bus services. Due to the ongoing industrial action – part of a stoush between unions and NZ Bus over drivers' working hours and pay – AT announced some of its routes would be cancelled on Monday. "Limited services" sourced from other bus companies would be operating on "some key NZ Bus routes" on Monday, said an AT spokesperson. An emergency landing system that passengers can activate
ON NOVEMBER 9TH 2018 a Piper Dakota light aircraft flying over Iowa broadcast a distress call. The pilot seemed to have suffered a heart attack. One of the other three people on board, a student aviator, had taken over the controls, but to no avail. The plane crashed shortly afterwards, killing all four. How often such things happen is not well recorded. But an Australian report published in 2016 listed 15 cases in the five years from 2010 to 2014 of the pilots of small aircraft being incapacitated. In three of these the aircraft suffered what is known euphemistically in aviation circles as a “collision with terrain”. Occasionally, an instructor on the ground, perhaps assisted by a pilot flying alongside in another aircraft, has been able to provide an instant flying lesson to someone on board a plane that has lost its pilot, and talk them down successfully. But not often. It is tricky enough for a neophyte to keep an aircraft flying straight, level and on an appropriate … [Read more...] about An emergency landing system that passengers can activate
Inside the island airport frozen in time
The Trident Sun Jet remains motionless on the tarmac to this day, right where it came to a stop. The only things that have changed since 1974 are the fading paintwork and rusting parts. The decaying passenger jet is one of the eerie remains of Nicosia International Airport on Cyprus, the formerly bustling airport that time forgot. Picture: Athanasios Gioumpasis/Getty ImagesSource:Getty Images The airport was once a state-of-the-art transport hub on the popular Mediterranean holiday island. The hi-tech terminal opened in 1968 with restaurants and shops to service international travellers flocking to Cyprus. Idyllic beaches, medieval cities and an enviable island climate, were making the island a favourite destination among regular holiday-makers as well as the rich and famous, including actors … [Read more...] about Inside the island airport frozen in time
Plane crash-lands in S Sudan, at least 49 injured
JUBA, South Sudan: A passenger plane crash-landed and burned in Wau, northwestern South Sudan on Monday, but all 49 passengers and crew survived, an airport official. The plane was landing but then crashed, said Wau's Acting Airport Manager Stephen Youngule. "The plane touched down and then jumped up again. The pilot couldn't control it," said Youngule, who is also Deputy Director of Air Traffic Services. "I saw it until the very last moment before the fire engulfed the aircraft." When the plane crashed, its door flew open, which allowed the pilot and rescue crews to get everybody out, he said. Those with injuries were taken to Wau's hospital for treatment, said Youngule. The plane, an Antonov 26, carried 44 passengers and had five crew members, said Youngule. On social media, images appeared of the plane with smoke billowing from the wrecked fuselage. U.N. peacekeepers worked with local emergency workers to evacuate passengers from the plane, according to David … [Read more...] about Plane crash-lands in S Sudan, at least 49 injured
