Taylor Swift, who’s been signed to Big Machine Records since she was a teenager, has left the label for Republic Records and Universal Music Group. The new deal comes with a special stipulation about Spotify. In an Instagram memo posted on Monday, Swift confirmed that the deal means she’ll get to own all her master recordings, a source of reported contention in her negotiations with Big Machine, whose execs were working hard to keep her. Swift also noted something more important to her than her masters: protections in the streaming economy for herself and other artists. She stated: As part of my new contract with Universal Music Group, I asked that any sale of their Spotify shares result in a distribution of money to their artists, non-recoupable. They have generously agreed to this, at what they believe will be much better terms than paid out previously by other major labels. She added that she sees this move as a positive change for creators. Swift hasn’t been … [Read more...] about What Does Taylor Swift’s Universal Deal Mean for Her and Other Artists?

To mark the end of 2018, global superstar Taylor Swift and streaming service Netflix threw one hell of a New Year's Eve party. There were snakes, there was glitter, there was confetti and there were the best indoor fireworks you've ever seen.Didn't attend? Not to worry, there's still time. The movie version of Swift's 53-date, award-winning, record-topping blockbuster Reputation stadium tour was released on Netflix Monday. Having attended two dates on the tour and seen Swift perform live for the first time in three years, I thought I knew what to expect from the movie. What I didn't expect was feeling equally as moved and starry-eyed while tucked up on my sofa on a cold winter's night as I did back on those warm evenings last summer. Not only did it spirit me back onto the stadium arena, but it left me with an overwhelming sense of relief that this spectacle has been committed to film I can revisit any time. It's a smart move for Taylor Swift to partner with Netflix rather than a … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour lives forever and ever on Netflix

And from what I've glimpsed online -- and in real life, courtesy of a preview at a BBC festival last weekend -- it looks to be a dazzling, banger-filled, snake-adorned sequin fest. But ahead of seeing the show, the one thing I can't get enough of online are the social media outpourings from fans who've met her backstage in an intimate venue called the Rep Room. There's a breathless quality to their stories, which often spill out over threaded tweets, punctuated with all-caps exclamations and strings of random letters used to convey their speechlessness. They describe their tears, their racing hearts, how deeply shook they were. It's something I've seen firsthand.During a London stop on Swift's 1989 World Tour, I looked on as Swift's mother, Andrea, who just happened to be walking by, picked two fans out of the crowd. After a long and earnest talk with her, the two teenage girls decked out with homemade … [Read more...] about How Taylor Swift flipped online fandom on its head for the better

At a Taylor Swift concert earlier this year, fans were reportedly treated to something they might not expect: a kiosk displaying clips of the pop star that served as a covert surveillance system. It’s a tale of creeping 21st-century surveillance as unnerving as it is predictable. But the whole ordeal has left us wondering what the hell is going on. As Rolling Stone first reported, the kiosk was allegedly taking photos of concertgoers and running them through a facial recognition database in an effort to identify any of Swift’s stalkers. But the dragnet effort reportedly involved snapping photos of anyone who stared into the kiosk’s watchful abyss. “Everybody who went by would stop and stare at it, and the software would start working,” Mike Downing, chief security officer at live entertainment company Oak View Group and its subsidiary Prevent Advisors, told Rolling Stone. Downing was at Swift’s concert, which took place at the Rose Bowl in Los … [Read more...] about What’s Up With That Story About Secret Face-Scanning Tech at a Taylor Swift Show?
