Eddie Vedder opens up about Chris Cornell’s death onstage in London

In the wake of Chris Cornell’s shocking death on May 19, Eddie Vedder has continued his solo tour through Europe, which kicked off on May 29 in Amsterdam. As Consequence Of Sound’s Randall Colburn (also an A.V. Club contributor) reports, Vedder has been tweaking his lyrics and set lists at various show points to indicate his grief, like adding covers of Neil Young’s “The Needle And The Damage Done” and Cat Stevens’ “Trouble.” But last night’s show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo “found Vedder directly addressing Cornell’s passing for the first time.” The singer told the crowd: So I haven’t really been talking about some things and… now it feels like it’s conspicuous because I lost a really close friend of mine… he wasn’t just a friend, he was someone I looked up to like my older brother. About two days after the news, I think it was the second night, we were sleeping in this … [Read more...] about Eddie Vedder opens up about Chris Cornell’s death onstage in London

Days After London Terror Attack, the UK Government Is Already Going After WhatsApp’s Encryption

After the horrifying terror attack in London last week, the familiar debate over government access to encrypted communications has reared its head again. This time, Britain’s home secretary Amber Rudd—who deals with security, terrorism, and policing, among other things—pointed the finger of blame at companies that make encrypted communications possible. “We need to make sure that organizations like WhatsApp, and there are plenty of others like that, don’t provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other,” Rudd said on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show yesterday. Advertisement She added, clearly nostalgic for the days before encryption, that investigators who obtained search warrants used to be able to “steam open envelopes or just listen in on phones when they wanted to find out what people are doing.” But that simply doesn’t work with end-to-end encryption, which makes messages unintelligible to anyone other … [Read more...] about Days After London Terror Attack, the UK Government Is Already Going After WhatsApp’s Encryption

Rediscovering Edgar Wright, Luc Besson, and ’50s London

What Are You Watching? is a weekly space for The A.V Club’s film critics and readers to share their thoughts, observations, and opinions on movies new and old. First things first: After several months of piloting this feature solo, I’m opening it up to the rest of the A.V. Club team. Every week, you’ll hear from at least two other members of our staff in addition to the usual rambling, incomplete thoughts about silent and black-and-white movies that are my stock in trade. This is the way this feature was always supposed to work; it just took a little time to get it into shape. And so, without further ado… Advertisement One of the most perplexing things I’ve been lucky enough to see for the first time this year has been Tomatos Another Day, a short film made by James Sibley Watson in 1930 that pokes fun of the bad Hollywood movies of the time. Watson was a very interesting character. The heir to both sides of the Western Union fortune, he was a … [Read more...] about Rediscovering Edgar Wright, Luc Besson, and ’50s London

Henry Cavill and Kevin Smith agree: Man Of Steel’s orgasms are super

What’s old is new again in the world of Kryptonian semen: Almost 20 years after Kevin Smith raised the question in Mallrats of just how powerful Superman’s orgasm would be, current Man Of Steel Henry Cavill has resurrected the debate in an interview with Cosmopolitan. It’s not known at this time just how close to the food court Cavill was when discussing the matter, but we hope there were no chocolate-covered pretzels involved. Cavill is still out stumping for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., but he’s been fielding just as many questions about Superman for some reason. As is its wont, Cosmopolitan cut right to the heart of the matter and asked Cavill to choose the best mate for Superman—Lois Lane or Wonder Woman. Cavill began by saying such a decision requires a “very long discussion,” but based on his answer, he wasn’t thinking about work schedules and common interests. Advertisement Rather than consider things like mortality and the … [Read more...] about Henry Cavill and Kevin Smith agree: Man Of Steel’s orgasms are super

Facebook Announces Intent to Make Its Platform ‘Hostile’ to Terrorists

In the wake of yesterday’s terrorist attack on London Bridge—one that left at least seven people dead—Facebook has announced its intent to render its platform “hostile” to terrorists. According to CNN, Simon Milner, Facebook’s director of policy, released a statement on Sunday emphasizing that the company “aggressively” pursues and removes “terrorist content.” Advertisement “We want Facebook to be a hostile environment for terrorists,” Milner said. These remarks follow British Prime Minster Theresa May’s call for a more strictly regulated internet. At present, those with the desire to do harm have a world of information at their disposal, not to mention platforms for private communication. “We cannot allow this ideology the safe space it needs to breed,” May declared. “Yet that is precisely what the internet and the big companies that provide internet-based services provide.” … [Read more...] about Facebook Announces Intent to Make Its Platform ‘Hostile’ to Terrorists

Sainsbury’s opens a pop-up restaurant for dogs this holiday season

It might be nothing more than a promotion, but it’s the most adorable one we can think of. U.K. supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced it’s opening a pop-up restaurant for dogs for three days this holiday season, hosted in a London art gallery. With the purchase of a £5 ticket, dogs and their humans can enjoy a 45-minute time slot at the event in which to eat, drink, and sniff. This is obviously an advertisement for Sainsbury’s grocery products: Dogs will be served Sainsbury’s Mince Pies For Dogs, and humans will be offered a glass of sparkling wine along with Sainsbury’s On The Go Christmas Market sandwiches. However, the offerings will be classed up with waiters and silver service, so you can really go all in on your delusion that the dog is another member of the family. After your meal, pups can pose for a professional portrait dressed in their holiday finest—because, yes, Sainsbury’s also has a line of dog sweaters. … [Read more...] about Sainsbury’s opens a pop-up restaurant for dogs this holiday season
