A reliable public charging infrastructure will be key to fostering the growth of electric vehicles — even if those chargers don't get used much. The U.S. Alternative Fuels Data Center's most recent numbers show 16,457 EV charging stations, with 44,999 outlets in operation, mostly on the coasts, but also including Tesla's network of Superchargers along major intercity corridors and other superfast charging stations. The presence and visibility of these stations should help build confidence among consumers thinking about buying battery EVs that they will be able to charge wherever they want. But once people live with an EV, they often realize they don't need access to public chargers as much as they once needed public gasoline stations, or require the same kind of quick fill-up.After all, millions of Americans have some basic form of charging infrastructure in their homes. They plug in overnight, just as they do with their smartphones, and top up at other times when they're home or … [Read more...] about The biggest EV question: Where are you going to plug in?
When Ford Motor Co. was attempting to dethrone Ferrari on the racetrack at Le Mans, then-President Henry Ford II had one directive for his drivers: "Go like hell."More than a half-century later, Hank the Deuce's nephew called on that phrase to help define the company's first battery-electric crossover, due out next year.Speaking Monday at the "Crain's Detroit Business" Newsmaker of the Year luncheon, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford said the Mustang-inspired vehicle "is going to go like hell."The callback to that phrase isn't an accident. It underscores a change in strategy for how Ford views its EVs. The company's early forays into electrification included now-discontinued vehicles such as the Focus Electric and C-Max plug-in hybrid that were known more for their fuel economy than performance capabilities."When we first started talking about electrification, there was this thought that there had to be a trade-off: It was either going to be green and boring and no fun, or … [Read more...] about Bill Ford: Mustang-inspired electric crossover ‘going to go like hell’

Earlier this year, the startup Nuro announced its intention to deliver Kroger groceries autonomously in Arizona. While that's already started, it's now time for the program to rely on Nuro's own autonomous delivery pods.Nuro announced Tuesday that its unmanned delivery pods have been let loose in Scottsdale, Arizona, as part of its autonomous delivery pilot program with Kroger. The pilot has been running since August, but earlier stages relied on modified Toyota Priuses with vehicle operators. Now the whole shebang will operate without human input, although some Priuses will remain in operation. Here's how it works. Customers can place delivery orders for groceries from a single Fry's Food Stores location (7770 East McDowell Rd.), and they can choose to have it delivered by self-driving vehicle. The delivery can take place the same day or the next day, and it costs a flat fee of $6 for delivery, with no minimum for the order itself. When the pod arrives, the customer will head outside, … [Read more...] about Nuro launches autonomous Kroger grocery delivery pods in Arizona
