Killjoys’

From Boba Fett to Dog The, pop culture loves its bounty hunters. They work a sleazy, dangerous, and alluring beat that treats low-life scofflaws to high-octane thrills. The fantasy of hauling in an unruly perp to collect a serious cash reward endures in Syfy’s new drama Killjoys, which takes romanticized thuggery to a star system far, far away. Its protagonists are reclamation agents, which is another term for bounty hunters, which itself is another term for Killjoys. Synonyms are alive and well in Killjoys’ vision of the future. Advertisement Penned by Lost Girl creator Michelle Lovretta, Killjoys hangs its shingle on a decisive female lead. Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) is a top-level reclamation agent, equal parts sassy, dangerous, and mysterious. And she has zero issue with shooting first: Although Dutch’s moral compass seems reasonably calibrated, fleeting glimpses of her childhood suggest she was raised with the sole purpose of becoming an emotionless killing … [Read more...] about Killjoys’

A California Brush Fire Made The L.A. Sky Look Like It Was The End of Days

If you were in the Los Angeles area on Saturday and looked up into the sky, you might have thought there was a storm rolling in, or that the bright, glowing red sun was an omen for Armageddon. The brown, smoky sky apparent throughout the county and in surrounding areas was the direct result of a brush fire in the Santa Clarita Valley, which was first reported on Friday. As of the last update by officials, the fire is only 10 percent contained and had grown from 5,500 acres to around 22,000 acres overnight thanks to strong winds and excessive temperatures that impacted most of North America this weekend. Officials also confirmed the fatality of a man whose remains were found in a burned out sedan Advertisement According to the Los Angeles Times, it had been decades since the last major fire. That, combined with the drought, only made the area prime for a large event. “Five years ago, if we had a similar fire, we would have probably caught [it] at the ridge,” Los Angeles … [Read more...] about A California Brush Fire Made The L.A. Few Americans Will Escape an Awful Heat Wave This Week

Do you like sweating profusely and racking up enormous AC bills? Then you should head anywhere east of the Rockies stat, because this week, a high pressure dome is coming to town, and it may bring some of the hottest summertime highs the US has ever seen. Since last week, weather forecast models have been in agreement that a high pressure ridge of air will march across most of the contiguous US this week. It’s expected to spawn in the Plains tomorrow, strengthen on Wednesday, reach the Northeast by Friday, and persist through the weekend. Advertisement The heat wave is predicted to bring temperatures of above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) to many locations and highs above 100 (38 degrees Celsius) to especially lucky states, including Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. By the latter part of the week, parts of Minnesota and the Great Lakes places may experience highs close to thirty degrees Fahrenheit above normal. Potentially hard-hit cities include Minneapolis, Des … [Read more...] about Few Americans Will Escape an Awful Heat Wave This Week

“Heat Dome” In the Middle East Creates Insanely High Temperatures

The Middle East is roasting right now. Last week, an unprecedented ‘heat dome’ descended over a vast region from Dubai to Beirut, and there’s no sign of it breaking anytime soon. Last Friday in the Iranian city of Bandar Mahshahr, the air felt like 165º F (74ºC). As The Washington Post notes, this is the second highest heat index ever reported, period. (The actual air temperature, minus humidity, was closer to 115ºF, or 46ºC.) This week, temperatures in the southern Iraqi city of Basra are expected to hover around 123ºF, rising a bit on the weekend, The Guardian reports. In Lebanon, temperatures will stay in the 90s, but high humidity levels are making it feel much hotter. Advertisement The hellish temperatures are due to a meteorological phenomenon known as a ‘heat dome’ — a high pressure ridge that develops in the upper atmosphere, forcing the air below it to sink and compress. In many cities, the heat has has been made … [Read more...] about “Heat Dome” In the Middle East Creates Insanely High Temperatures

The Vita’s

I think the people at Sega are proud that Super Monkey Ball has joined Ridge Racer as a series that is essentially a lock to get a new game when new gaming hardware comes out. But what new stuff is there to do with each Monkey Ball roll-out? On the 3DS, they put the series in 3D. For the Wii Balance Board, they had you control it with your feet. The iOS versions let you tilt the system. The Vita version, subtitles Banana Splits lets you control with tilt, which works nicely. You roll your monkey-in-a-ball across platforms suspended in mid-air, trying not to fall off as you approach the goal (technically you're tilting the stage, of course). But that's not very special. That's standard Monkey Balling and a Monkey Ball game's got to do other things with the Vita, too. Advertisement In the limited build of the game I played today at a Sega press event in New York I was able to try out one of Monkey Ball's Vita experiments: a stage-creation mode that translates a photo you've taken … [Read more...] about The Vita’s

Beam me up: A beginner’s guide to the

Star Trek 101 Star Trek is more than pop culture; it’s 20th century mythology with its own complicated mythos. “Beam me up” and “live long and prosper” may have invaded the cultural lexicon, but Star Trek is particularly intimidating for the uninitiated. Where to start and what to skip are up for debate even among the most hardcore Trekkies and Trekkers (the fandom can’t even decide on a name for itself). One thing is clear: It all begins with Gene Roddenberry, the visionary who created the original show in the 1960s and presided over the franchise until his death in 1991. The WWII fighter pilot turned TV writer would have turned 93 this August. He’s survived by a franchise that encompasses five live action TV shows, one animated series, and 12 films. Given that Star Trek will celebrate its 50th anniversary in just two short years, this the perfect time for new fans to jump on Roddenberry’s “Wagon Train to the stars.” … [Read more...] about Beam me up: A beginner’s guide to the
