Picking the best mutual fund: Are past returns relevant after re-categorisation?
Juzer GabajiwalaInvestors always give a lot of weight to the past performance of returns. In fact, most decisions are always made on the basis of returns. In the case of mutual funds, it is not that you need to ignore the returns as that is ultimately the performance parameter of the fund manager. While selecting a scheme for investment or while deciding whether to continue with a current investment, a fund’s performance track record does play a critical role and returns usually take precedence over other important factors that are considered while investing.Close However, given the changes recently introduced by SEBI with regard to categorisation of schemes, this parameter would not be an appropriate tool at present.Juzer GabajiwalaDirector|Ventura Securities Take the SIP route for equity mutual funds amid volatility, keep 3-5 yrs horizonHow tax is calculated on debt mutual fund investmentsInternational funds: Key to achieving geographical diversificationIn order to enable … [Read more...] about Picking the best mutual fund: Are past returns relevant after re-categorisation?
Is a Labour/Lib Dem pact the way forward?
John Harris’s Labour 2020 analysis (Who should Labour speak for now?, 13 July) could be as helpful to the Liberal Democrats as to Labour – perhaps, in the long run, rather more useful than his G2 feature on fitting the party’s MPs into a Mazda Bongo (The strange death of the Liberal Democrats, G2, 13 July). Traditionally, a shorthand way of distinguishing liberals from socialists philosophically (at least from a liberal perspective) was to say that socialists looked for a redistribution of money and liberals focused on a redistribution of power. Obviously there is a large area of overlap in terms of outcomes and, to some extent, policies, but these aims can indicate different routes to a fairer and more fulfilling society. The trade union origins of the British Labour party have made it difficult for it to get beyond the wealth and work priorities. It may be that Labour’s future attitude on the electoral system will be one test as to whether it can do this. For … [Read more...] about Is a Labour/Lib Dem pact the way forward?

‘This is like Stop the War with bells on’: Jeremy Corbyn team shocked at momentum
Maggie Dunn has worked with Jeremy Corbyn since the Winter of Discontent in 1978-79, when they were both officials at Nupe, the now-defunct National Union of Public Employees. She is one of his oldest political friends. On Friday she took a break from the Corbyn for Leader campaign and headed to the Buxton opera festival in Derbyshire. “It is all very exciting,” says Dunn, who can’t quite believe how, after all the years of singing old tunes that few wanted to hear, Corbynism is now resonating up and down the country with young and old. In Buxton she found herself discussing plans to take state services back under public ownership with a clerk from the House of Commons. “It does feel unreal. I am having political discussions that I haven’t had for donkey’s years. People are talking about whether we should be renationalising things. It is wonderful.” She has a grandson at Oxford University who tells her that Corbynism is catching on there, too. … [Read more...] about ‘This is like Stop the War with bells on’: Jeremy Corbyn team shocked at momentum
