Hong Kong’s democracy movement has gained a big electoral boost
AFTER NEARLY six months of unrest in Hong Kong, involving increasingly violent protests, vandalism and transport chaos, the government had reason to hope that public opinion might have turned against the demonstrators. No such luck. Instead, voters handed a stunning victory to pro-democracy candidates in district elections on November 24th. The message was plain: for all the recent mayhem, Hong Kongers strongly dislike their government and its backers in Beijing. The result was a strong endorsement of the protesters’ campaign for political freedoms. Ostensibly the election was merely about picking 450-odd representatives to district councils—bodies that recommend policies relating to humdrum local problems. This time, however, the turnout was huge—a record, indeed, for any kind of election in Hong Kong that involves a public vote. Nearly 3m voters—more than 71% of those registered—took part, up from 47% four years ago (some are pictured queuing). Farage ally said black men are violent due to high testosterone
A former Ukip activist who is partnering with Nigel Farage in launching a new pro-Brexit political party has argued crime and fatherlessness among black men are due to high testosterone levels, and suggested their lower academic achievement could have a biological basis. Catherine Blaiklock has also expressed concern about “Muslim enclaves” and said food banks should be abolished as they create a “dependent, obese population”. The former parliamentary candidate and economics spokeswoman for Ukip, who has also argued too many women train as doctors, confirmed at the weekend she had applied to register Farage’s new party last month. Farage, a former Ukip leader, has vowed to contest any general, local or European elections with the new party if he believes Brexit is being thwarted. Blaiklock quit Ukip in December, shortly after Farage did the same. They were among a series of high-profile members to leave after the current leader, Gerard Batten, appointed … [Read more...] about Farage ally said black men are violent due to high testosterone
Asians could swing next UK general elections: Study
LONDON: Asian and black voters are likely to decide the outcome of Britain's next general election in 2015, according to a new study. The study by cross-party group Operation Black Vote (OBV), which campaigns for a fairer vote across various communities in Britain, found the number of seats where ethnic minority voters could decide the outcome had rocketed by 70 per cent compared to the 2010 election. "The black vote has never been so powerful. This is great news for all those who thought we could never effect change," OBV spokesperson Simon Woolley said. "With this political leverage I'm sure many will want to demand greater race equality. This research is a political game-changer - above all, if ethnic minority communities and politicians respond positively to it, democracy wins," he added. The OBV study suggests that the ethnic minority vote is bigger than the majority of the sitting MP in 168 marginal seats. In 2001, the census showed Britain's ethnic minority population was 7 … [Read more...] about Asians could swing next UK general elections: Study
John Major’s speech in full as he slams Johnson’s ‘overmighty’ advisor Cummings
Sir John Major has launched a savage attack on Boris Johnson and his Government - urging the new Prime Minister to ditch his "overmighty advisers" before politics is poisoned "beyond repair". The former prime minister accused the Government of operating via "bluster and threat in a climate of aggressive bullying", as he criticised the PM over the controversial decision to prorogue Parliament. He also demanded the 21 rebel Tory MPs who voted against the Government on Tuesday night should be reinstated. Failure to do this would mean the Conservatives would "cease to be a broadbased nations party, and be seen as a mean minded sect", Sir John said. Read the full speech below. It’s a great pleasure to be here this evening. This is not the speech I intended to deliver. But we are not living through normal times …… In Westminster, Ministers who wish to leave Europe without a deal are playing fast and loose with the future of our United Kingdom.
