“The overwhelming amount of death and disease attributable to tobacco is caused by addiction to cigarettes—the only legal consumer product that, when used as intended, will kill half of all long-term users,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in an agency statement. “Unless we change course, 5.6 million young people alive today will die prematurely later in life from tobacco use. Envisioning a world where cigarettes would no longer create or sustain addiction, and where adults who still need or want nicotine could get it from alternative and less harmful sources, needs to be the cornerstone of our efforts—and we believe it’s vital that we pursue this common ground.” … [Read more...] about FDA Considering Forcing Companies to Reduce Nicotine in Cigarettes to Non-Addictive Levels
If the idea of an bonkers assassination plot rings a bell, that’s probably because North Korea was implicated in the murder of Kim Jong Un’s estranged half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, back in February. Two women, one of whom claimed she thought she was participating in a TV prank, smeared the nerve agent VX on Kim Jong Nam’s face. VX, classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations, is 100 times more deadly than sarin when applied to the skin. Kim Jong Nam died on the way to the hospital. … [Read more...] about North Korea Thinks the CIA Hired a Lumberjack to Assassinate Kim Jong Un With Nano Weapons?

But the motor of the world that Galt speaks of is also an actual goddamned motor, a magical engine harnessing the powers of static electricity that functions as a Deus Ex Machina that will solve all the crumbling world’s problems if Galt, who created it, decides to let an unworthy universe have access to his handiwork. But Galt isn’t about to do that. Instead, he and his fellow strikers establish a perfect utopia hidden from the outside world called Galt’s Gulch where special, superior people can lead special, superior lives now that they are no longer at the mercy of the government. The Gulch is supposed to be a utopia where children innocently strum acoustic guitars while their home-schooling mothers bake luscious croissants and everyone has the creepily upbeat countenance of Stepford Libertarians, pod people ecstatic to finally be liberated from any responsibility, but it feels more like a cult. Atlas Shrugged Part III acts as if everyone would be able to fly their … [Read more...] about Ayn Randy case file #47:
The as yet unnamed supernova, which scientists are temporarily referring to by the not terribly catchy PSN_J09554214+6940260, has been classified as a Type Ia supernova, a supernova formed by either the collision or, in this case, explosion of a star. They're also commonly used by astronomers to measure distances across the universe. … [Read more...] about A white dwarf just exploded, creating the closest supernova in 25 years
To be fair, the video is fine. It’s even kind of cool! It opens with a fight scene where Swift’s character (uh, Catastrophe) is double-crossed by her presumed ally Arsyn (played by Selena Gomez), who kicks her out of a window (and through the shattering heart of Frank Miller) before running off into the night. What follows is an endless stream of three-second intros to badass women who parade through Swift’s fictional badass world, where they’re ostensibly training for an ultimate showdown with Arsyn’s faceless crew. Look, there’s Lena Dunham smoking a cigar like some sort of mob boss! There’s Zendaya (who is hands-down the most amazing of the cast in this video), Karlie, Serayah, and Hailee emulating characters from various existing action and sci-fi movies! We knew to expect Mariska Hargitay and Ellen Pompeo (whose famous respective TV characters, Olivia Benson and Meredith Gray, serve as the namesakes for Swift’s cats), but why are … [Read more...] about Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” Video Is Not A Feminist Manifesto
