The 2020 Audi SQ8 has been unveiled after what seems to have been an eternity. Powering the performance-focused version of the sleek Audi Q8 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged diesel V8 engine also used by the SQ7. With a total of 429 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque from as low as 1000 rpm, the SQ8 is able to sprint off the line and hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds before topping out at an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The vehicle’s powertrain incorporates a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack which powers an electric compressor to virtually eliminate all turbo lag. Customers can drive the SUV on pure electric power at speeds of up to 14 mph (22 km/h). It’s not just the engine which distinguishes the SQ8 from other models. The $2000 Challenge: 20 Years Of Wild Budget Builds
Go racing for $2000. It seems impossible, right? Think again. When we first issued the call to action for the $1500 Challenge, we didn’t think anybody would attempt it. Why? Because low-buck racing just wasn’t a thing back in 1999. We assumed our first $1500 Challenge wouldn’t have any actual competitors, so our staff members built their own budget race cars to ensure we’d still have something cool to write about. Good news: We were wrong! Our readers built some of the wildest cars we’d ever laid our eyes upon, and they did it with just $1500. After that first event, we upped the budget $500, officially creating our annual $2000 Challenge. 20 years later, the field of Challenge winners is full of some of the most innovative, clever, and just plain fast cars we’ve ever seen, so we created this definitive list of every $2000 Challenge winner so far. Of course, there is one car missing: The winner of this year’s $2000 Challenge … [Read more...] about The $2000 Challenge: 20 Years Of Wild Budget Builds

UK car market is oversupplied says Vauxhall boss
That’s the view of Vauxhall Motors boss Steve Norman interviewed in What Car Insight this month. “The UK market is so oversupplied and over-invested that it’s extremely difficult to make decent unit margins. I think that’s true of almost all brands. “Just how profitable the UK market can become, leaving exchange rates aside, will be almost totally dependent not on Brexit but on right-sizing.“The industry has been pushing in so much volume that we’re over-supplied with cars. I’d say south of two million [sales per year] is healthy – so at least 10-15% below where we are now. “Who blinks first will be interesting,” he said. Last month Mike Jones, chairman of ASE, which runs the rule over the accounts of hundreds of dealers each month, said the June market had been forced with self-registrations to meet targets. “I will be watching carefully how these bonuses are earned and ultimately released to see the overall … [Read more...] about UK car market is oversupplied says Vauxhall boss
Seeing Pigs Through Rose-Colored Glasses
Late last week you might have seen headlines that went something like this: The headlines came, respectively, from BBC News, EurekAlert, and the Daily Mail. This sounded pretty fishy to me. Optimism or pessimism requires a certain amount of introspection and future awareness. Without a meaningful sense of the future, optimism doesn't mean very much. I don't know much about cognition in pigs (and, for that matter, there hasn't been a ton of research on it), but I'm at best skeptical that pigs have the cognition required to plan for the future. I looked and looked for the original research that these articles were reporting on, but I could not find any. Finally, I found the original press release from Newcastle University. Surely a university PR office would do a more thorough job of reporting. One thing was made clear by the press release: they were reporting not on published research, but on a poster that the Douglas lab had presented at the UFAW Animal Welfare Conference. Technically … [Read more...] about Seeing Pigs Through Rose-Colored Glasses
Toyota Feeling the Heat from Rebellion in Final WEC Practice
Toyota Gazoo Racing continued to lead the way at the FIA World Endurance Championship 4 Hours of Silverstone, but Rebellion Racing are hot on their toes and look to be keeping the battle alive ahead of tomorrow’s race. Pole is going to be a battle between Toyota and Rebellion later today, as the quartet of cars lapped within a second of each other this morning. Kazuki Nakajima set the benchmark time of a 1:37.014, putting him three tenths up on Rebellion’s Nathanael Berthon. The two Toyotas were split by both Rebellions, as Gustavo Menezes beat Mike Conway by 0.031. The two Team LNT were out on track a lot for the final practice session of the event, with the #5 seemingly overcoming it’s issues from yesterday to beat the sister car to fifth on the timing screen. The Ginettas were around a second and a half off the pace of the Rebellions and Toyotas, but will be happy with a strong finish ahead of the LMP2 cars if this pace remains into tomorrow’s race. … [Read more...] about Toyota Feeling the Heat from Rebellion in Final WEC Practice
