WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI -- A 78-year-old Florida man has been arrested and charged in Wisconsin after authorities say he may be the person responsible for his wife's death in 1979. According to court records, John Bayerl has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, and is being held in the Waukesha County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond. If convicted, John Bayerl faces life in prison with no possibility of parole. According to Muskego police in May 1979, John Bayerl told officers that his wife, Dona Mae Bayerl left their home after a quarrel, and drove off in the family car. The car was returned that night. John Bayerl told police that when the children woke up the next morning, Dona was gone. At the time, local authorities believed she did not leave of her own free will. Police found blood in the garage, determined to be Dona Bayerl's, according to information posted by police on the City of Muskego's website. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston and the woman who accused him of rape while both attended Florida State University have settled the civil lawsuit she brought against him. Federal court records show that Winston and his accuser, Erica Kinsman, “reached a compromise with contingencies” Wednesday with joint motions for dismissal anticipated within 20 days. Terms of the settlement are confidential. Blaine Kerr, one of the attorneys representing Kinsman, said “the case has been resolved to the satisfaction of the parties.” The trial had been scheduled to begin 3 April in US district court in Orlando. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted, but Kinsman has spoken publicly about her case, including in a documentary. Kinsman sued Winston in April 2015 for sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment and emotional distress stemming from a December 2012 incident. Kinsman has said she was drunk at a … [Read more...] about Jameis Winston settles lawsuit with woman who accused him of rape
Henderson, North Carolina — Surveillance video from a North Carolina middle school shows a school resource officer walking a student down a hallway then suddenly stopping, slamming him to the ground twice, then dragging him, reports CBS Raleigh affiliate WNCN-TV. The officer was put on paid leave after the video surfaced. It was recorded Thursday in Vance County Middle School. The officer is an employee of the Vance County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Curtis Brame says he handed the investigation to the State Bureau of Investigation after reviewing the video, which had no audio. The officer's name wasn't released. "When we first saw the video, we were stunned, we were shocked. We all are parents and grandparents that have children at that same age, so it brought some great concern to us," Brame told WNCN. … (The video) is very graphic. I don't expect my deputy or any deputy or law enforcement in North Carolina to carry out their duties in that way." Vance County District … [Read more...] about Video shows North Carolina middle school officer slamming student to ground, twice
1. Paper ballots and audits should be routine Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate for president, has done a public service in demanding that the votes be audited in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Even where paper trails exist, most states do not audit elections. It is important to know that the vote each of us casts is counted fairly. In Wisconsin, Donald Trump’s narrow margin over Hillary Clinton was 0.7 percent, in Pennsylvania 1.2 percent, and in Michigan 0.2 percent. In Michigan, for example, Trump won by 10,708 votes out of 4,799,284. Further, 80,000 submitted ballots with no mark for president, which, at minimum, should be checked by the human eye. Computer experts like Professor J. Alex Halderman at Michigan urged Clinton to join Stein’s challenge. Computerized voting machines—“touch screens” or DREs (Direct Recording Electronics)—which leave no paper trail, are notoriously unsafe. Both Halderman and Professor Andrew Appel of … [Read more...] about How Do We Know Our Elections Are Fair?

Until 2015, when same-sex marriage was illegal in the United States, the “ideal” family structure featured a cisgender man and a cisgender woman at its helm. But independent of the law, same-sex family structures still existed, with many of those couples having and raising children. Even after the legalization of same-sex marriage, there is still a visibility barrier when it comes to children of LGBTQ parents in mainstream media. We do not see them represented in the perfect middle-class family commercials or many sitcoms or movies. Through a photo book, photographer Gabriela Herman, who is the product of LGBTQ parents, fought to tell the stories of the sometimes-invisible children who are raised in LGBTQ communities. Over the course of seven years, she has photographed more than 75 men and women across the country. Included with Herman’s photos are profound anecdotes of life as the child of atypical parents, ranging from funny to heartbreaking to inspirational. The … [Read more...] about Breathtaking Portraits of the Children of LGBTQ Parents
