It seems Volkswagen has a plan for how to compete with the Model 3, Tesla's cheapest electric car. It's pretty simple: just undercut the Model 3 on price by a huge margin. The Model 3 currently costs $45,000 (before savings) where as Volkswagen is planning a $23,000 alternative. Ever since the emissions scandal, Volkswagen has been working to repair its reputation and part of that involves embracing electric vehicles. Last year, the German manufacturer promised to electrify 300 vehicle models by 2030 as well as installing 2,800 charging stations across the US. Now the attention is turning to new vehicles and the leader in the EV market right now: Tesla. Tesla Inc.’s expansion on the home turf of Volkswagen AG, Daimler AG and BMW AG is gathering pace.The company announced a plan to open its largest service center in Germany as it scales up Model 3 deliveries across Europe. That came just weeks after Tesla unveiled a plan to build a factory near Berlin.The site of the new service center south of Hanover, about an hour’s drive from VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, covers 3,000 square meters (32,290 square feet), Tesla said Monday. TOKYO (AP) — Japanese securities regulators are recommending that automaker Nissan be fined 2.4 billion yen ($22 million) over the under-reporting of compensation of its former chairman, Carlos Ghosn. The watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission, said Tuesday it made the recommendation to the government’s Financial Services Agency on the disclosure documents from 2014 through 2017. Nissan Motor Co. said it accepted the penalty and had corrected its securities documents in May, although its final decision will come after it receives official notice. “The company takes this recommendation extremely seriously,” it said in a statement. Nissan was charged earlier with under-reporting Ghosn’s compensation. Ghosn was arrested in November 2018 and is out on bail. He has been charged with under-reporting is compensation and other financial misconduct.
