Best Buy's latest flash sale is under way, and, wow, there are some solid deals to be had. For example, could you use a 32-inch Insignia Fire TV for $100?Or have you been wisely waiting for an iPhone X deal? Because, as you'll no doubt recall, when it debuted in 2017 with a $1,000 price tag, we were all, like, "Yeah, no."Today only, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the unlocked Apple iPhone X (64GB) in silver or space gray for $699.99 shipped when you choose the "activate later" option. That's $300 off -- and an even better deal than just a few weeks ago, when it was on sale for $750.See it at Best BuyAs you've probably noticed on the product page, you also have the option of getting the phone for $649.99 -- but that's if you activate it with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. My advice: Buy it outright, then take it to a carrier with cheaper rates. You'll save in the long run, and you'll have the option of switching carriers anytime you want. The elephant in this particular room is the … [Read more...] about Get an unlocked iPhone X for $700

Apple's latest iOS update could make it a lot harder for law enforcement to access files on a suspect's phone. The new security feature will come with iOS 11.4, which is expected to be released in the next few weeks. It works by disabling the Lightning port, which is used for both charging and to sync an iPhone to a Mac or PC, if the phone has not been unlocked for seven days. The feature is a welcome deterrent for thieves, but will deal a blow to forensics experts as it may spell the end of iPhone “cracking”, a method used by law enforcement to break into phones, according to cyber security experts Elcomsoft. Police and forensics officials in the US are understood to be using a piece of hardware... Register or log in to view this and other Technology Intelligence articles. It's free and easy to do. Author's Note Full disclosure: I use an Android phone. One of the reasons I do is because I was able to get it with the plan and carrier that I wanted and wasn't tied down to a contract. Whether I'll switch to an iPhone now that the unlocked versions are available is an open question, but I suspect that my girlfriend -- an Apple fan for the last couple of decades -- is going to make the jump. The cell phone business is a complicated one, with contract restrictions, subsidized (and often free) phones if you'll commit to a couple of years with the same carrier, and different voice and data speeds with Edge, 3G and 4G carrier technologies. At least Apple has made things a little simpler -- or have they made it more complicated? -- by allowing unlocked iPhones. They've given us new options and, while that may make things more confusing, it has to be a good thing. This story is part of Apple Event, our full coverage of the latest news from Apple headquarters. It turns out the iPhone does go to 11. Apple is dropping the "X" for its latest iPhone, and returning to its naming roots with the iPhone 11, much to the disappointment of Roman numeral fanatics everywhere. Instead of relying on letters like the 5C and the XR did for Apple's entry-level iPhone, the $699 iPhone 11 will now be the new base model for Apple's iOS devices, essentially acknowledging that the "X" branding was a potential turnoff for customers. After the iPhone X's debut in 2017, there were plenty of questions for Apple, beyond "Wait, is it pronounced 'ten' or 'ex'?" One of the greater mysteries being what would happen in 2019 when the X names hit a wall? Well, Apple answered that very important question on Tuesday at the Steve Jobs Theater on its campus in Cupertino, California. Getting rid of the X also means you won't have to call the iPhone 11's companion devices … [Read more...] about Apple’s iPhone 11 drops ‘X’ and ‘R’

It wouldn’t be an iPhone launch without a small army of hand-wringing Apple fans complaining about their expensive new phones on the internet. This year is no exception, and forums are filling up with reports of issues with the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. None of the problems are particularly catastrophic. At least not yet. Before we get into the details, it’s worth pointing out that the iPhone XS devices are brand new. They’ve been out in the wild for less than two weeks. The public release of iOS 12 is equally new, although it enjoyed many months in beta-testing. So it’s not necessarily a surprise that a new iPhone with new software will suffer from a few bugs. We’ve seen it happen before—most notably in 2010, the year of Antennagate—and we’ll see it again. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be pissed off if your iPhone XS is all messed up. We’re making a running list of the widespread complaints about the new phones, … [Read more...] about Major Complaints About the iPhone XS Are Stacking Up
