As they say about one of those stick and ball sports, on any given Sunday any team can win. Well it’s the same in Formula Drift. As the 16th season of the sport got underway on the Grand Prix course in Long Beach, one week before the NTT IndyCar Series and IMSA take over that circuit, Odi Bakchis beat all comers to win the opening round. Yes, Odi Bakchis, the Likeable Lithuanian beat ‘em all.That includes last year’s champion the Irishman James Deane, the champ before that Fredric Aasbo, and three-time titleholder Chris Forsberg. Controversy certainly is nothing new to the NHRA’s Pro Stock Motorcycle gang, but the rebuking and rubbish-slinging this week between Steve Johnson and Matt Smith stirred more drama than expected for the class’ first spring trip to Las Vegas for this weekend’s Denso Spark Plugs Four-Wide Nationals.At the center of this latest commotion is the NHRA Tech Committee’s rule changes following the most recent race three weeks ago, the Gatornationals.In yet another predictably futile attempt at parity, the sanctioning body added 15 pounds to bikes using V-Twin engines (Harley-Davidsons, Buells and EBRs). National dirt star and NASCAR part-timer Tanner Thorson remains in the hospital following a multicar incident on Highway 99 in Modesto, California on Monday morning.On Wednesday, the 2016 USAC National Midget champion underwent a second surgery, this time to repair his broken right foot, following Monday's surgery on his broken left arm. He also had a breathing tube put in to help pump up his collapsed lungs.Thorson also suffered a cracked sternum, broken ribs and a punctured lung in the incident but is expected to make a full recovery.
