Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation: Out, Out, Damned Spot! The dark spots that form around acne blemishes result from a condition called postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sometimes they're fairly light and unnoticeable, and sometimes they're large dark marks. This condition can also be caused by excessively dry skin. Dry skin can occur as a result of acne treatment, especially when moisturizers are not used following application of treatments that have a heavy alcohol content or contain salicylic acid. Your skin has its own immune system that acts and reacts to stimulation or invasion of the skin. Sometimes these responses are helpful, and sometimes they just contribute to further problems. When there's inflammation of skin caused by acne or dryness, certain substances are released by the body, such as arachidonic acid, prostaglandins and leukotrienes. These substances speed up and increase the functioning ofmelanocytes (melanin-producing cells) in the epidermis, which then … [Read more...] about Why does acne cause dark spots on your skin?

George Doyle/Stockbyte/Getty Images It's a month before the big day, and the mounting responsibilities of a busy bride are no doubt starting to get to you. Your maid of honor may forgive you for leaving her on the phone with a dial tone over a wedding-related disagreement, but threatening to sue your caterer when the dinner menu isn't up to your impossibly high standards means you've gone too far. A never-ending bridal to-do list can take a toll on your psyche, and the stress of planning a wedding can transform even the sweetest, most mild-tempered girl into a monstrous bridezilla. Blu-U Side Effects You've already learned the not-so-good news: The long-term effects of Blu-U aren't yet known. However, it seems that the side effects of the treatment are minimal and not very damaging. The light therapy does not go deep enough into your skin to affect the normal tissue -- only the acne lesions it's targeting. The treatment itself isn't painful, although it could be slightly uncomfortable to have your face in a chin rest for 15 minutes. The reported side effects of Blu-U are usually mild and include redness or other temporary pigment changes, swelling of the treated areas and dryness. These symptoms should go away a few hours after the treatment is complete, so talk to your dermatologist if your skin is still red or dry after a few days. There are a few more things you should know before making a Blu-U appointment. First, you can't undergo blue-light therapy if you're pregnant or nursing. Second, the treatment is meant for people who have the most common form of … [Read more...] about Blu-U Treatments
Easy does it -- use a gentle cleanser, twice a day, to help with acne. Purestock/Thinkstock While we traditionally think of acne as a problem limited to adolescence and early adulthood, the truth is that anyone can get acne, from infants to adults. An estimated 17 million Americans suffer from acne -- let's break down the different types of acne and talk about who gets which type and when. First let's talk about baby acne. Babies are prone to rashes and redness, but baby acne is harmless and clears up on its own after several weeks without treatment. Prepubertal acne is a form of acne that you've probably never heard about because it's rare and it occurs in children before they hit puberty, caused by a premature release of sex hormones called androgens. And then there's rosacea, which is a chronic adult skin condition that causes flushing and acne-like bumps on the face. And what about pimples? Let's talk about those zits. To understand why we get the most common form of acne, … [Read more...] about Quick Tips: Help for Acne
Back Acne Treatments Bacne can sometimes be alleviated through home treatments. Some home remedies also stoke a lot of old wives' tales, so steer clear of these so-called "remedies": Sunlight: Stay away from the tanning bed. Sunlight hasn't been proven to diminish pimples, and the harmful effects of ultraviolet light -- namely risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging -- far outweigh the perceived benefits. Excessive washing: Acne isn't the result of dirty skin, so there's no need to scrub your back five times a day. Do keep your back clean by using a mild soap to wash away excess surface oil and dead skin cells. Popping pimples: As tempting as it is to get rid of pus-filled zits by popping them, you should avoid squeezing acne blemishes. Picking can cause further inflammation and force the pus deeper into your skin. Unproven home remedies: Colloidal oatmeal, nettle, mint, lemon juice, aloe vera and vinegar have also been … [Read more...] about How to Get Rid of Acne on Your Back
