Women of color are entrepreneurs. But if you look at the tech scene, you'd hardly know it.A new study from the Kapor Center, Pivotal Ventures and Arizona State University's Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology found that women of color make up 80 percent of all new women-led small businesses in the US. In tech, however, that figure plummets to 4 percent. This is just one stat highlighted in Women and Girls of Color in Computing, a report released Monday. The study comes at a time when we've come to expect annual diversity reports from large tech companies like Facebook, Apple, Google, but those reports don't include a full range of statistics. One of the most notable breakdowns often left out is the percentage of women of color at the company. Women of color often get lumped into the broader category of women. In short, there's not enough data out there that focuses on women on color. And that can be problematic. Why are some medical services overused and other underused? Andy Crawford/Dave King/Ying Yang/Image Source/Getty It turns out that it is possible to have too much of a good thing and not enough of something even better. The overuse and underuse of medical services is a global healthcare crisis the medical industry is desperately trying to remedy, as described in a series of papers published by The Lancet. The issue is rampant around the world, with overuse and underuse often occurring side-by-side in varying economies. The Issue With Overuse Medical services that are overused are considered more likely to cause harm than good if used inappropriately. "Overuse of unneeded services can harm patients physically and psychologically, and can harm health systems by wasting resources and deflecting investments in both public health and social spending, which is known to contribute to health," the researchers explain in the first paper in the series. The researchers outlined a number … [Read more...] about Which Medical Services Are Overused and Underused?
In a competitive market, getting your property listed on a multiple listing service can help expose it to thousands of potential buyers. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images In today's merciless real estate market, you need all the help you can get. How do you put your house out there to attract serious buyers? You're going to need to do more than just posting a For Sale sign on your lawn and putting an ad in the paper. For decades, the most effective way to do that has been to hire a real estate agent to help sell your house. He or she will list your property on a multiple listing service. A multiple listing service is a collection of private databases used by real estate brokers who agree to share their listing agreements with one another to locate ready, willing and able buyers for properties more quickly than they could on their own. Brokers earn sales commissions from the sale of properties they listed and properties they help sell as a buyer's representative. So what advantages … [Read more...] about How Multiple Listing Services Works
Year In Review We look back at the best, worst, and most significant moments of the year, and look forward to next year. 2019 is the year that tech gets it together, we can feel it. Last year, we pegged our hopes for 2018 on ambitious technologies like mixed reality and alien alloys. We learned our lesson. Looking ahead to 2019, we’re excited to see tech wrestle with some of its failures and possibly innovate its way out of the messes it’s created. As tone-deaf, duplicitous, and just plain wrong as the tech world often is, there’s still a good chance that it started to read the room over the last year. Pressure from lawmakers, the public, and from within is growing and there’s a reason to believe we’ll see newcomers and the establishment taking steps to curb issues like screen addiction and invasion of users’ privacy. Don’t count on Jeff Bezos allowing workers to take an extra pee break or Sheryl Sandberg sacrificing profits to make a … [Read more...] about New Technology Changes
Dear God.That's my first thought as I wriggle into the black, skin-tight catsuit. I look ready to perform motion-capture for Lord of the Rings. I pull the leggings up over my waist, then I take a quick selfie to really check myself out. Oh boy.The garment, known as a Zozosuit, clings to my skin without remorse. It shows everything. The chocolate gut. The pancake biceps. The junk in the trunk and the tucked family jewels. This is a devastating self-burn. Why would I do this to myself? Now playing: Watch this: The Zozosuit might change the way we buy clothes 4:28 The Zozosuit is the brainchild of Yusaku Maezawa, a punk drummer turned Japanese billionaire entrepreneur and founder of Japan's biggest online fashion retailer, Zozotown. He also happens to be a big fan of Jean-Michel Basquiat and, thanks to Elon Musk, he's set to be the first private citizen to go to the moon. Having been struck by an inability to find clothes that fit him perfectly (he cites his short stature for … [Read more...] about Zozosuit: The bizarre spandex bodysuit revolutionizing the fashion industry
