Planning an Alpine Tour A group of alpine tourists on the ascent in Norway Vegar Abelsnes Photography/The Image Bank/Getty Images If you want to go alpine touring, the Alps would seem an obvious starting point. And ski touring in Europe is, in fact, very popular. You can travel for a week or more through Switzerland or Italy, staying in mountain refuges along the way. But alpine touring is also popular in the United States. The Adirondacks in New York are considered a good place for beginners because the mountains have a gentler slope. Beginner trips can range from one to three days. The best time to go depends on your level of expertise. "Corn snow," prevalent in the spring, is best for newbies because there's an upper "crust" that can support weight. Also for this reason, morning trips are safer, because the temperature hasn't had a chance to rise. Powder snow is popular with more experienced alpine skiers. Fresh, untouched powder requires quicker climbing so you don't … [Read more...] about How Alpine Touring Works
©2006 William Yum The Montreal Casino is a fun option for a cold Montreal day. See more pictures of beautiful cities. Montreal has it all. It's a place for fun and festivals as dozens of summer celebrations highlight everything from all that jazz at the annual International Jazz Festival to tickling your funny bone -- more than a few stars were born at the Just for Laughs annual comedy bash. It's a place for food -- everything from haute cuisine to poutine, a local concoction that promises your American-made French fries will never be the same. Shopping ranges from chic neighborhood boutiques to fripperies, where bargain hunters search for their next second-hand treasure. Art, architecture, and rich religious history abound, influenced by immigrants in search of a New France and a new life. Then as now, the result of this compliment of ethnic cultures is a diverse and sophisticated, friendly and tolerant attitude that leaves no one behind. Mostly, Montreal is about its … [Read more...] about Montreal City Guide
The best cookbooks share the vicarious, time-and-place-traveling qualities with our most beloved works of fiction. What other genre of literature stimulates pleasure centers in the brain that respond to satiation, and fires your imagination to consider its taste possibilities? Cookbooks changed my life, not in the trite cliched sense, but actually: A children’s cookbook at age 8 inspired me to cook my own ramen (a big boy feat!), which took me down a rabbit hole of Japanese culture, which prompted trips to Japan as a teenager, which encouraged me to take two years of college Japanese. On the night I met my future wife, our conversation centered around spaghetti carbonara, specifically the recipe from Mario Batali’s Molto Italiano. The first domino to fall in those life-changing sequences were, indeed, nudged by a cookbook. Selecting a beginning (2000) and end date (2017) based on the current century seems arbitrary and arbitrarily convenient. But here’s why … [Read more...] about guide to the best cookbooks of the century so far
As the sky turns fiery shades of pink and purple, visitors watch the lava flowing into the ocean from the eruption of Kilauea, a volcanic crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Douglas Peebles/Corbis via Getty Images The last time Alaska's Pavlof Volcano erupted, in March 2016, it ejected a 400-mile (640-kilometer) ash cloud to an altitude of 37,000 feet (11,277 meters). The stream of sharp, powdered rock shut down air travel and major highways. On July 28, the U.S. Geological Survey raised the alert level for Pavlof, which seemed ready to do it again. But volcanic eruptions are notoriously unpredictable. The USGS raised the alert level for Pavlof back in May, too, but nothing happened. Hans Lechner, doctoral candidate in geology and engineering sciences at Michigan Technological University, says volcanologists haven't figured out the timing yet. "A volcano may show all the signs of an impending eruption," Lechner writes in an email, "increased seismicity, high gas flux, surface … [Read more...] about Could Humans Force a Volcanic Eruption?
