Chinese truck builder Foton was established in 1998 and produces primarily heavy-duty vehicles for its home market. As a professional car guy and amateur curmudgeon and skeptic, I miss the early years of the 21st century. I miss them, because those were the years that Chinese automakers were making the most noise about selling cars in the U.S. Journalists who attended auto shows in the early 2000s where companies such as Brilliance, BYD, Geely, and Changfeng Liebao presented their wares will recall with glee spectacular U.S. sales projections and shockingly tone-deaf video presentations. I vividly remember a Geely press conference at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show, which included a video touting the company’s industrial might. The 5-minute-long film included ominous images of an army-like assembly of several hundred blue-overall-clad workers exercising in unison, and giant smoke-belching chimneys–presumably meant to signify the company’s manufacturing vigor. … [Read more...] about Dreaming in Chinese: Meet Foton, The World’s Would-Be 8th-Largest Carmaker

Our Dacia Logan Black & White in Sighisoara, Romania On 20 August 2018, Romanian manufacturer Dacia celebrated 50 years of activity since its very first car rolled out of the Mioveni factory near Bucharest in 1968: a Dacia 1100, a rebadged Renault 8. Since, 8 million Dacias have been sold worldwide, including 5 million since the brand’s revival with the Logan in 2004 and 1 million in France alone. As a frequent BSCB reader you would indeed be very familiar with the continued success of the Dacia brand pretty much everywhere it has launched over the past 15 years. To this day, Renault remains the only carmaker in the world to have managed to create a very profitable low-cost brand, with many competitors admiring its success yet none having taken the plunge themselves. It’s simple, from 2004 onwards and its 94.720 sales, Dacia has broken its worldwide annual volume record every single year, recording 14 years of uninterrupted growth. The brand crossed the 250.000 … [Read more...] about 10 countries in 10 days in a Dacia Logan – 1/10: Romania

Henry Ford is practically revered as the patron saint of American cars, and the Model T is his holy text. But it wouldn’t have happened if not for the life, and possibly the death, of two of his biggest rivals: the Dodge brothers. And if it weren’t for a small complication, such as the most deadly pandemic in recorded history, our cars might look very different today. On Nov. 1, 1916, Henry Ford’s son Edsel married Eleanor Clay in the home owned by the department store tycoon J.L. Hudson. It was a small, cozy informal affair filled with close friends who happened to be members of Detroit’s elite. This guest list included a pair of fiery, hard-drinking redheaded brothers named John and Horace Dodge. The Dodge Brothers weren’t always so welcome in polite society. Both Horace and John were incredibly prolific drunks and public rabble-rousers. Horace once started a brawl in a bar and then threatened to kill the owner of the newspaper that reported it. John … [Read more...] about Bar Fights, Lawsuits and the Flu Pandemic: The War Between Henry Ford and the Dodge Brothers
Maintenance foreman Gary Frost inspects huge dump trucks before they start the day at Barrick's Ruby Hill Mine outside Eureka, Nev., in 2006. They're definitely big, but these aren't the biggest mining trucks in use. See more pictures of trucks. AP Photo/Douglas C. Pizac The world's biggest truck isn't a Ford F-450 Crew Cab pickup truck, or even a Mack truck with a double trailer. The biggest trucks in the world are used in mining, and perhaps calling them big is an understatement -- these trucks are truly enormous. The giant dump trucks used to haul heavy metal ores out of mining pits weigh in the neighborhood of one million pounds (453,592 kilograms) and can carry and dump more than 300 tons (300,000 kilograms) of material in the back. Where a Honda Fit has 117 horsepower and a Jaguar XF has 300 horsepower, these mining trucks have about 3,000 horsepower available for moving all that mass. Mining trucks stand more than 20 feet (6.1 meters) tall -- the driver could climb from … [Read more...] about What is the biggest truck in the world?
