Bordeaux reborn
It's Sunday night and my final meal in Bordeaux. I'm talking with a local called Brigitte in Le Plat à Oreilles, a popular husband-and-wife-run restaurant in the city centre that serves traditional country food. So far, so Bordeaux. But as I dig my spoon into the fricassée de lapin and try not to slurp my glass of Graves, I'm finding it hard to recognise the city that Brigitte is describing. "Growing up in Bordeaux, I never really saw the river," she says. "It was physically blocked off by the port until about 10 years ago. In the city centre, the buildings were dark and dirty, and you couldn't really sit outside in the squares because of all the cars. It wasn't a very inspiring place to be." Think of Bordeaux, and images of a classic French city spring to mind – its grand boulevards, open spaces and neoclassical buildings inspired Baron Haussmann's remodelling of Paris in the mid-19th century. Add to that the venerated reputation of its wine, and a whiff of bourgeois … [Read more...] about Bordeaux reborn

Column: Minimum wage is a boon for student employees
As difficult as it might be for businesses to budget the new expenses, student employees need the minimum wage raise. Proposition 206 was passed last November in order to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour by 2017, then incrementally increase it to $12 by 2020. This was proposed with many corporate institutions that pay minimum wage in mind, including fast food and retail jobs. However, the proposition also affects small businesses, despite the relatively higher burdens that would be imposed on those businesses. Small business owners on University Boulevard have shown concerns about the minimum wage increase because university students are many of the shops' staff and regular customers. RELATED: University business owners concerned about minimum wage boost These shops, especially the restaurants, are easily accessible for students. Within walking distance from the university, high volumes of students come through the eateries on University Boulevard. University business owners concerned about minimum wage boost
Local businesses on University Boulevard near the UA are concerned about the new minimum wage hike. These businesses are mostly run by students as staff. Proposition 206 was approved by voters last November to raise the minimum wage from $8.15 an hour to $10 an hour. With this new mandate, businesses on University Boulevard expect to be impacted because of this raise. “It is pretty pricey especially for a restaurant like ours,” said owner of Kababeque Indian Grill, Saurabh Sareen. “I don’t feel comfortable that I can charge $10 an item to students.” The award-winning Kababeque has been in business for 15 years and has over 20 part-time students as staff. The minimum wage boost has added $5,000 a month to the restaurant's budget. But Sareen’s business has expanded as a food truck service for special events such as Kababeque Express. “People who work hard, deserve to get paid more obviously, and I think we are just under the radar so we are … [Read more...] about University business owners concerned about minimum wage boost
