Some HSBC customers have been locked out of their mobile banking services, as MPs launched a formal inquiry into banking IT failures following a string of service disruptions this year. A spokeswoman for the bank said customers were intermittently prevented from signing on to the mobile app, but online banking via browsers had been operating as normal. The issues were first reported at about 8.20am on Friday, with services restored at about 2pm. HSBC was not able to confirm how many customers were affected. “We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the bank said. It is the fourth time this month that HSBC has been forced to apologise to customers over mobile or online banking disruptions, with outages also logged on 6, 16 and 18 November. In a thumbs up to the Indian government’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) scheme, Google has written to the US Federal Reserve Board detailing the successful example of UPI-based digital payment in India in order to build “FedNow” -- a new interbank real-time gross settlement service (RTGS) for faster digital payments in the US.In a letter written by Mark Isakowitz, Vice President, Government Affairs and Public Policy, US and Canada, Google, the company said it worked closely with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the payment regulator government by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), to build ‘Google Pay’ for the Indian market. WhatsApp has started rolling out its payment service to select users in India. The Facebook-owned firm had confirm working on this feature early last year.WhatsApp uses the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for its payment service on the messaging app. This payments method enables one to send and money receive through their UPI-linked bank accounts. It ensures a fast and swift transfer of money without having to store balance in a wallet.WhatsApp’s UPI payment service hasn’t officially been rolled out to users. Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp last week started rolling out UPI-based payment feature to select users in India. While the feature hasn’t been officially rolled out but a lot of WhatsApp users on iOS and Android have already received the feature.
