Landslides on an island in the Canadian Arctic have risen sixtyfold since the mid-1980s due to the thawing permafrost, according to scientists studying the effects of climate change. The landslides have choked bodies of water with silt on the 70,000 square kilometers Banks Island in the Canadian Arctic; have made fishing harder for the island's Inuvialuit community; and released greenhouse gases by thawing and exposing organic materials which then rot. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications explored a phenomenon called retrogressive thaw slumps, which happen when ground ice in the permafrost melts. Permafrost is the term used to describe ground which stays frozen for at least two years. The scientists conducted their study by analyzing images from the free-to-use Google Earth Engine Timelapse sheet. Between 1984 and 2015, the number of retrogressive thaw slumps spiked 60 times, from 63 in 1984 to 4,077 in 2013. By 2015, an area the size of the island of Manhattan, or … [Read more...] about Thawing Arctic Permafrost Could Cause 30,000 Active Landslides on One Small Canadian Island Every Year in the Future
A car company's flagship model is usually a very special thing. And when that company is known for advanced technology and competes in the luxury market, like Audi does, that's doubly true. In contrast to most of the cars on our roads, Audi's flagship A8 is packed to the gunwales with technology: advanced driver assists and active safety systems made possible thanks to networked steering, suspension, engine, and driveline, aided by a host of sensors and cameras around the vehicle. Most of the tech in the car will eventually trickle down into lesser models, but until that happens, you'll need relatively deep pockets to experience the best Audi has to offer. We spent some time with a pair of Audi's latest A8s (one diesel, one gasoline) and the faster, more expensive S8 on some of Colorado's finer highways and byways recently, and we think they might be the ultimate Ars car. Do all auto-addicts have their own gateway cars? In my case, it was the early … [Read more...] about The Audi A8 is the perfect car for the tech-obsessed plutocrat
Vistara Flight UK966 landed at Ahmedabad airport a short while after it took off following a technical snag. The flight was headed towards Delhi when the incident happened. The flight took off from Ahmedabad at 8:40 pm and turned around and landed at 8:56 pm, according to multiple live flight tracking sites. It seems the aircraft did not fly higher than an altitude of 1000 m during its short fly around. Vistara's fleet is composed entirely of Airbus A320-200 and A320neo aircraft. Most A320neo planes in India, most from IndiGo, have been grounded after a technical fault in the Pratt & Whitney engines threatened engine failure mid-flight. It is unclear if UK966 was an A320 neo, or the earlier A320-200 variant. Vistara soon tweeted to clarify that their fleet of Airbus A320 neo aircraft did not suffer from the same issues that have grounded IndiGo's fleet. The airline said it had chosen to go for the CFM International LEAP-1A engine, and not the now-problematic Pratt & … [Read more...] about Vistara Flight UK966, an Airbus A320, Ahmedabad-Delhi flight suffers technical snag
