Apple has closed the Group FaceTime security bug that put users at risk of eavesdropping. The company said in a statement Friday that it has fixed the vulnerability on its servers and that it will issue a software update to re-enable Group FaceTime next week.The bug had meant that any Apple device -- including iPhones, iPads and Macs -- could inadvertently or intentionally be turned into a listening device. It was all in how you entered the number of someone you were looping into the video chat. Apple now faces an investigation over its FaceTime security flaw. New York attorney general Letitia James announced the investigation on Wednesday, saying that Apple failed to warn people about the bug and did not quickly address the issue. The investigation will focus on Apple's response to the FaceTime bug, and the attorney general's office is accepting public complaints about the vulnerability on a hotline at 1-800-697-1220."New Yorkers shouldn't have to choose between their private communications and their privacy rights," James said in a statement. Before the world learned about Apple's FaceTime bug, a 14-year-old boy in Arizona first discovered it, while playing a game of Fortnite with his friends. On Jan. 19, Michele Thompson's son started a group FaceTime call with his friends to talk while playing the online game. He added a friend, and was able to listen to conversations even though his friend didn't answer the call yet. He first reported the bug to his mother, a lawyer in Arizona, who spent the last week trying to warn Apple about its FaceTime security flaw before the bug became widely known. Apple users were vulnerable to a major bug that allowed people to listen in on FaceTime calls before the recipient answered the call. The bug worked by adding your own number to a Group FaceTime call, which then allowed you to hear audio from the original recipient's phone, even if that person did not accept the call. Somewhere deep inside Valve’s labyrinthine compound of Steam-sustaining tubes, wires, and pipes, somebody is thanking their lucky stars for Artem Moskowsky. The self-described “bug hunter” came across a glitch that allowed him to generate thousands of free keys for any game on Steam. A lesser person might have kept that knowledge to themselves. He reported it. Moskowsky discovered and reported the bug back in August, but Valve only allowed the information to go public recently. For his troubles, the company paid him $20,000—as opposed to a lifetime of free games, which is what would’ve happened if this was a feel-good episode of a sitcom.
