One of the earliest family photos captured at Stonehenge shows a group enjoying a carriage-ride and a picnic at the prehistoric monument 144 years ago. English Heritage asked people to send in pictures of themselves, family or even ancestors at the site to mark 100 years of public ownership. After sorting through more than 1,000 photos submitted by the public, researchers believe some of the images from 1875 are the oldest. Among the of pictures was a black and white snap from the descendants of Isabel, Maud and Robert Routh believed to date back to 1875. The photograph shows the trio on a horse and carriage in the middle of the stones, which tourists are now given limited access to as a means of preserving the monument. Stonehenge was ‘dragged into position using LARD’: Massive stones of the 5,000-year-old Wiltshire monument may have been slipped into place using ‘greased sledges’ lubricated with pig fat
Stonehenge's enormous monoliths may have been dragged into place using 'greased sledges' aided with the lubrication of pig fat. The lard-based method for the construction of the iconic Wiltshire monument is a theory suggested by archaeologists at Newcastle University. Pig fat residues were found on pottery shards at Durrington Walls, near Stonehenge, which have long been associated with feeding the hundreds of people who helped build the landmark New analysis has found that the evidence of lard may actually stem from bucket-sized dishes which may have been used for the collection and storage of tallow – a form of animal fat. Scroll down for video Pig fat could have been used to grease the sledges used to transport the massive stones of Stonehenge into position, archaeologists have suggested Dr Lisa-Marie Shillito, Senior Lecturer in Landscape Archaeology, Newcastle University, said: 'I was interested in the exceptional … [Read more...] about Stonehenge was ‘dragged into position using LARD’: Massive stones of the 5,000-year-old Wiltshire monument may have been slipped into place using ‘greased sledges’ lubricated with pig fat
A THIRD of married people are guilty of ‘financial infidelity’ and hide self-indulgent purchases from their partner by using cash and getting items delivered in plain packaging
Modern relationships face many issues and a new report has added another problem to the list - financial infidelity. It found that a third of people are dishonest when it comes to their spending habits and lie to their partner about what they are buying and how often they are buying it. The guilty parties often use cash, opt for an individual bank card and have a joint account to help hide their paper trail. Getting items delivered in plain brown boxes and burying unnecessary expenditure within the receipt from a large supermarket or department store are also ways they hide in plain sight. Worldwide meat consumption and livestock farming ‘must peak’ within the next decade to hit 2050 CO2 emissions targets and prevent climate change spiralling out of control
Humans needs to drastically reduce the amount of meat they consume over the 10 years to prevent climate change spiralling out of control, scientists have warned. In an open letter sent to the prestigious Lancet journal, a team of academics from around the world call on 'high and middle income countries' to hit 'peak meat' by 2030 as it is 'necessary' in order to halt the climate emergency. This would mean that, by the end of the incoming decade, the number of livestock around the world should have peaked and started to decline. The letter sets out a four-part plan, which scientists say will greatly help meet climate targets outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement. They believe that within the next 10 years it will become essential for humanity to move away from eating animals and rely more on vegetarian alternatives. The eagle has FINALLY landed! First sea eagle to fly in England’s skies for 240 years settles on the Isle of Wight after incredible 422 mile tour of his new territory
A sea eagle that took a trip over southern England has completed a 422-mile round trip and now returned home to the Isle of Wight. Culver, a male, was one of six birds released on the island over the Solent as part of a rewilding programme throughout the UK. He was released nine days ago and took flight to the north, reaching as far afield as Essex before heading back homeward bound. The bird has not been seen in England for 240 years but conservationists hope to revive the ailing species. Wild lynx to be reintroduced to Britain after more than 1,000 years: Big cats will be let loose in four forests if charity applications are successful
Wild lynx could soon return to Britain for the first time in more than 1,000 years. The Eurasian lynx, the third largest predator native to Europe after the brown bear and grey wolf, is believed to have been extinct in Britain since 700AD. But the Lynx UK Trust is set to submit a second licence application this summer to bring the big cats back to Kielder Forest in Northumberland. The organisation has also selected three forest areas in Scotland for lynx, with an application due in the autumn which could see lynx return to the UK this year. While supporters of 'rewilding' claim reintroducing the lynx would help to control deer populations and boost tourism, farmers have expressed concerns that lynx could pose a threat to their lambs. The wild cats need to eat up to 4.5 pounds of meat a day. Scroll down for video Wild lynx could soon return to Britain for the first time in more than 1,000 years.
