SpaceX has just sent a cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS) containing everything from supplies and a floating robot to genetically engineered mice. But for its next shipment to the ISS via Dragon capsule, something even more unusual will be on board: A selection of cannabis plants. The cannabis being sent into orbit is surprisingly not Elon Musk’s personal stash but is rather part of an experiment by agricultural technology company Front Range Biosciences. It’s not for getting the astronauts high as it’s hemp, which is a strain of cannabis with minimal psychoactive effects — instead, it has potential uses as food, as a building material, or even as a biofuel. The company works on the breeding and production of new varieties of hemp and coffee, and it wants to know how these plants respond to microgravity. As bizarre as the experiment may sound, plants do respond strangely to the low levels of gravity found in space, and researchers still … [Read more...] about SpaceX’s next resupply mission will deliver cannabis into orbit

SpaceX completed a ground-based test of its Crew Dragon’s launch escape system on Wednesday, the first such test since April 2019 when an explosion wrecked the capsule. No one was hurt in the incident. The space company led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced in a tweet that a “full duration static fire test” of Crew Dragon’s SuperDraco emergency engines had taken place at Cape Canaveral, Florida and that it was now working toward an in-flight test of the same system. The engines are designed to activate in the event of a problem during launch, carrying the capsule and its occupants away from the rocket and out of danger. Employees at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida have reportedly been told that they could be fired for sharing photos and videos from inside the facility after footage of SpaceX's Crew Dragon dramatic explosion was circulated without apparent consent from the company nor the space agency. According to an internal memo seen by the Orlando Sentinel, the ban refers to workers employed by aerospace company Jacobs under the Test and Operations Support Contract (TOSC). A spokesman for Jacobs said that this policy includes a "standard warning", with punishment including dismissal. "This communication was intended as an internal reminder to our TOSC workforce. It is common practice for businesses to provide guidelines to employees regarding the release of information pertaining to company business or activities," the spokesman was quoted as saying. On 20 April, SpaceX was … [Read more...] about NASA Workers Banned From Sharing Images After SpaceX Capsule Explosion Leak
Elon Musk has said there's a 70 per cent chance he'll personally move to Mars, despite there being a 'good chance' of him dying there. Musk says people will be going up to the red planet within seven years - and tickets will cost around $200,000 a person. The SpaceX CEO said flights to Mars would be possible on the Starship, previously known as the BFR (Big F***ing Rocket). I'm talking about moving there', Musk said as part of an interview aired on HBO current affairs programme Axios on Sunday night. 'We think you can come back but we're not sure', he added. Musk likened the trip to Sir Ernest Shackleton's trip to the Antarctic in the early 20th century. 'There's lots of people who climb mountains. People die on Mount Everest all the time. They like doing it for the challenge', he said. 'It's … [Read more...] about Elon Musk could be on Mars in seven years: SpaceX CEO vows to go to the red planet and admits there’s a ‘good chance’ he’ll end up DYING there
It was supposed to be a record breaking day for space launches with four rockets blasting off, and the latest round in the battle of the space billionaires. However, both Elon Musk's SpaceX and Blue Origin, the space firm set up by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, were forced to cancel launched within minutes of each other this morning. Arianespace's Soyuz launch has also been delayed 24 hours due to high-altitude winds above the launch site, leaving just ULA's Delta IV Heavy to blast off later today. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, carrying a roughly $500 million global positioning system (GPS) satellite built by Lockheed Martin Corp, was due to take off from Florida's Cape Canaveral shortly after 9:30 a.m. local time (1730 GMT), but was stopped minutes before takeoff. THE CANCELLED LAUNCHES Blue Origin, backed by … [Read more...] about The battle of the space billionaires put on hold: Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos both cancel launches within minutes of each other (but both say they could try again tomorrow)
A former commander of the International Space Station (ISS) believes Jeff Bezos will outshine rivals Richard Branson and Elon Musk in the pursuit of commercial space flight. The billionaire founder of Amazon set up Blue Origin, a firm which he hopes will one day enable low cost passage to space. Polarising maverick Elon Musk is often in headlines and Richard Branson's high-profile Virgin Galactic endeavour has had a spate of recent successes. NASA astronaut Terry Virts however, believes it is Bezos' no frills and relatively quiet approach to space flight which will see him distinguish himself above his peers.
