Jalopnik Reviews All of our test drives in one convenient place. Forget an R34 Nissan Skyline or a diesel Land Rover Defender. The 2018 Volkswagen California van is the not-legal-in-America car you should be lusting over. It’s comfortable to live in, easy to drive, has an expanding roof... what more could you possibly want from a big rolling brick? Well, besides the option to buy one in the U.S., which does not currently exist. And believe me, we are missing out. (Full disclosure: VW’s German commercial vehicles division was hosting a product launch for this camper van in and around Los Angeles. After a few waves of European journalists, from countries where the California will actually be for sale, sampled the vans a small group of Americans were allowed to check them out for fun. My colleague Jason Torchinsky and I roamed around the high desert and beach cities doing absolutely nothing and it felt like the most decadent two-and-a-half days of work I’ve ever … [Read more...] about The 2018 VW T6 California Van Is The Best Car That’s Also A House

Winter Cleaning Your House Cozy nights by the fire, holiday entertaining, snow and rock salt all over the house -- winter brings its own set of specific housecleaning challenges. This season is actually more about organization and preparedness than cleaning. Maintain your regular cleaning schedule but keep the following in mind. Inside, you should change your furnace filters a bit more regularly in the winter. The furnace runs more often, so -- especially if you have a fireplace -- there's more debris in the air. Winter is also a good time to clean your computer, since you have more downtime. Power the computer down and unplug it. Take off the back panel -- it's easy and usually just a couple of small screws. You don't need to touch anything. Just use some canned compressed air to blow out dust and pet hair from the components. Turn your keyboard upside down into a trash bin -- you'll be surprised at how many crumbs and things lodge underneath the keys. Wipe down the keys and board … [Read more...] about How to Clean Your House for Each Season
Water damage from burst pipes is the most common claim on homeowner's insurance. struti/Vetta/Getty Images Presidents Grant, Nixon and Carter slept here. So did President George H. W. Bush, a string of governors and other celebrities [source: Thayers Inn]. But the excitement surrounding their visits to Littleton, N.H.'s historic Thayers Inn probably paled in comparison to one of its more recent attention-getters. On a Friday in January 2014, a waterfall erupted at the top of the inn's grand staircase, rivers appeared in hallways lining the 1843 structure's 39 guest rooms and lakes formed in its first floor parlors and restaurant. A string of bitterly cold temperatures had caused a water pipe to burst in the building's attic, sending an estimated 500 gallons (1,900 liters) gushing for every minute the break remained unchecked. It took 10 to 15 minutes to turn the water off, resulting in enough leaked liquid to fill a residential swimming pool. Ceilings collapsed, wood floors … [Read more...] about What causes pipes to burst when they freeze?
You probably already know that for the sake of the environment, as well as your own pocket, you ought to cut your water use. You might already be turning off the tap when soaping up in the shower, and only using your dishwasher when it's full, but what about outside the house? In drier parts of the U.S., up to half the water used by a household is dedicated to lawn and garden care [source: Walsh]. You can limit the water going to waste out there simply by changing the time of day that you irrigate. If you arrive home in the early afternoon and see you favorite flowers wilting and your vegetables drooping, you probably run to turn on the sprinklers. However, this isn't the most water-efficient thing to do. When you water during the hottest part of the day, up to 30 percent of the water simply evaporates from the heat of the sun and doesn't do your plants any good [source: Lamp'l]. Instead, you should water in the early morning or the late afternoon or evening, so that your plants get … [Read more...] about What time of day should you water your plants?
In the last decade or so, researchers have become increasingly interested in how "natural environments" in urban landscapes affect our health, both mentally and physically. focusstock/Getty Images While Fraulein Maria can spin herself silly rhapsodizing about rolling hills, it turns out that it's the ocean views that you really might want to seek out when your heart is lonely. Or your mind is unwell. In a recent study published in the journal Health & Place, researchers found that Wellington, New Zealand, residents with water views (or blue space) had lower levels of psychological distress than those with views of green space. The study included 442 participants, 260 females and 182 males aged 15 or older. The researchers used a novel method to measure the visibility of ocean and green spaces. Called the Vertical Visibility Index (VVI), the method allows researchers to quantify how much of the green and blue space can be viewed from a human perspective, by taking into … [Read more...] about In Case You Need Another Reason to Buy a Beach House
