Carroll Shelby's Los Angeles car company, Shelby American, modified Ford Mustangs for road racing from 1965 through 1969. Unlike most of the powerful-but-ill-handling muscle cars coming out of Detroit at that time, the Shelby GT350 and GT500 were capable of going around a turn at speed (by the standards of 1960s American cars), and today real examples sell for frightening amounts of money. Here's a full-page magazine advertisement for the 1967 models out of Shelby American. In 1967, the Shelby GT350 came with a 306-horsepower 289 engine (Ford's strongest Mustang 289 made 271hp that year), while the first-year GT500 packed a heavy-but-powerful 428 generating 355 horses. Interestingly, the displacement of the GT500's engine isn't mentioned in the text of this advertisement, and the word "Mustang" is nowhere to be seen. 1967 Shelby Mustangs magazine advertisement(1.38 MB)Click here to download PDF … [Read more...] about 1967: Shelby GT350 and GT500 are THE road cars

The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be a barnstormer. It will deliver more than 700 hp from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8. Its 0-60 time will be in the mid-3-second range. It will get a dual-clutch transmission that will feature shifts measured in milliseconds. It goes on sale this summer. We got a few new tidbits today, the most newsworthy of which is that the new GT500's top speed will be limited to 180 mph. People seem to care about that. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First let’s dispense with the news.Obviously the new GT500 needs a ton of cooling, downforce and braking, so Ford brought it down to the wind tunnel at the Ford Performance technical center in North Carolina. It also used its 3D prototyping systems at the Advanced Manufacturing Center in Redford, Michigan. Did we mention that also keeps costs lower?“We created and studied designs among the engineering teams and proved out different strategies long before we built our first prototype … [Read more...] about 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will (only) top out at 180 mph, but does it matter?
We are still waiting on official performance numbers on Ford’s latest flagship. Hopefully we will have a good idea of what it is capable of before production begins. Thanks to our friends at Car & Driver, we know what it won’t be able to do: 181 mph. That is because Ford confirmed the Shelby GT500 top speed limiter. In their latest press release, they mention that maximum downforce was achieved at 180 mph. The track package cars will utilize the Mustang GT4 spoiler to make 550 lbs at 180 mph, while the base model cars generate 379 lbs. This is possible thanks to the “swing” a new combination of spoiler, wing, and a Gurney flap. The reasons for limiting the top speed make perfect sense. If you want a car that cruises above 200 mph, there are many choices for you. But they won’t offer the cornering or performance of the GT500. Going faster will only generate more heat and drag. The first is addressed by a secondary radiator along with a 50-Amp brushless … [Read more...] about Ford Confirms Shelby GT500 Top Speed Limiter
Saturday in Scottsdale was the place to be. While many were recovering from our Friday night party, Ford partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Their goal was to auction the first-production example of Ford’s new supercar. Watching from the Muscle Lounge, we saw the bidding frenzy erupt as the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 broke auction records. The winning bid was the highest ever offered for a new Mustang, $1.1 million, and it came from an unlikely bidder. Starting with no reserve, the price quickly escalated thanks to Ford fans, and philanthropists who want advance the cause of diabetes research. The frenzy reached a new high when our friend Craig Jackson tossed his hat in the ring. The owner and CEO of Barrett-Jackson could not be beaten, so he has won the rights to the first production car. The prototype on stage was shown with all available options, but Craig and his wife Carolyn will be able to order VIN 001 exactly to their liking. Stay with us for a … [Read more...] about 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 Breaks Auction Record at Barrett-Jackson
