What Does “BRB” Mean, and How Do You Use It?
What does it mean when a friend or coworker takes a bathroom break and uses the term “BRB”?We’ll explain what the popular acronym means, and how to use it properly. “Be Right Back” BRB stands for “be right back.” It’s used in online messaging and chatting when you have to leave your device to do something else temporarily. It’s typically used when you’re going to be gone for a short time to do a quick activity, such as going to the bathroom or answering the door. It implies that your conversation partner should wait for you to come back. It’s closely related to the acronym AFK , which stands for “away from keyboard.” AFK and BRB can be used interchangeably when one is taking a break from something. They can also be used together. For example, you might say, “AFK BRB” to let others know you’ll be away from your computer for a bit, but will be back soon. It can also be used with the idiomatic phrase “hold that thought” or “hold tight.” When either of these is used with BRB, … [Read more...] about What Does “BRB” Mean, and How Do You Use It?
When Are Integrated Graphics Good Enough on a PC?
Anybody looking for serious graphics power needs to have a graphics card from AMD, NVIDIA, or (someday soon) Intel. Not everyone wants that kind of power, however, especially when it comes at a price tag of $150 to more than $1,000. How Good Are Integrated Graphics? So what do you do if you aren’t interested in shelling out for a graphics card, but you’d still like to play the occasional session of Civilization VI or The Witcher 3 ? All is not lost. You can get usable, or sometimes even outstanding, performance from your CPU’s built-in or integrated graphics. It all depends on which games you want to play , what graphics settings you can accept, and how old your CPU is. Gaming is the main thing you need to be concerned with here. Integrated graphics will work just fine for most other typical uses of a PC. There are professional tasks that rely on a system’s GPU, too. These include video editing, graphics rendering, and GPU-accelerated computing with standards like … [Read more...] about When Are Integrated Graphics Good Enough on a PC?
How to Disable (or Enable) Windows 10’s Xbox Game Bar
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10 is a handy way to call up an overlay of useful widgets using the Windows+G keyboard shortcut. But not everyone needs it, and if you’d like to disable it (or enable it again later), all it takes is a visit to Settings. Here’s how. First, open Windows Settings. To do so, open the Start menu and click the small “gear” icon, or press Windows+i on your keyboard. In Settings, click “Gaming.” Under “Xbox Game Bar” settings, click the switch beneath “Enable Xbox Game Bar” until it is turned off. That will disable the Xbox Game Bar. After that, close settings. Try pressing Windows+G, and nothing will pop up. Even if you press the Xbox button on an Xbox controller, nothing will happen. Xbox Game Bar has been fully disabled. If you’d like to enable the Xbox Game Bar again, revisit the “Gaming” section in Windows Settings and flip the “Enable Xbox Game Bar” to the “On” position. How to Put Your Xbox Series X or S into Developer Mode
Developer Mode is available on the Xbox Series X and S. This feature can turn every console into a development kit. Microsoft officially announced it for the Xbox One back in 2016. Here’s how to use Developer Mode on a modern Xbox, and why you might want to. What Is Developer Mode? Microsoft first announced the Xbox would be getting a developer mode during its Build 2016 event keynote, along with the news that Universal Windows Platform (UWP) would be coming to the Xbox One. With developer mode enabled on a Microsoft console, it’s possible to install and run UWP apps. When developer mode is enabled, retail games and other services won’t work. Playing retail games and apps downloaded from the Microsoft Store requires that you restart your console. UWP was Microsoft’s big shot at a unified software platform that allowed apps to run on Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile (Windows Phone), Xbox One, and HoloLens. The benefit of a UWP app was that it didn’t need to be rewritten to be … [Read more...] about How to Put Your Xbox Series X or S into Developer Mode
