Photo: Netflix “NETFLIX IS A JOKE” reads a billboard by our offices in lower Manhattan. It is one of a few in New York and Los Angeles planted by Netflix themselves, part of an admittedly clever campaign to highlight the streaming site’s year of high-profile stand-up specials, both the ones already aired, like Dave Chappelle and Amy Schumer, and those to come: Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres. Last night, during the Emmys broadcast, Netflix debuted a pretty clever commercial to go along with the slogan. The campaign isn’t really a promotion as much as a brag. Netflix’s year of stand-up domination has been more of a win for Netflix than it has been for stand-up. If Netflix were a joke, it would be the one told by veteran comedian Andy Kindler at his annual State of the Industry Address at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival: “Netflix is releasing a new comedy special every week. It’s exciting because now you can binge-watch … [Read more...] about Is Netflix Helping or Hurting Stand-up?

Vanessa Hudgens in The Princess Switch. Photo: Netflix News about Vanessa Hudgens, Netflix, and Christmas should have spelled good things for The Princess Switch sequel, but, alas, the only story today is that Hudgens is set to star in and executive produce a DIFFERENT holiday-themed project for the streaming network. It’s titled The Knight Before Christmas, and per Deadline, the story “follows a gallant English knight who seeks out his true quest after a sorceress inadvertently sends him from the medieval era to present day. While there he soon finds himself falling for a caring high school science teacher who is disillusioned by love.” No word yet on whether Hudgens will play both sorceress and science teacher. Even though Hudgens previously expressed that she would be onboard with The Princess Switch sequel if it happened, it sure looks like she will be too busy to star in two Netflix Christmas movies at once — and that’s not even taking into account … [Read more...] about Vanessa Hudgens Is Making a Christmas Movie With Netflix, But It’s Not
It looked like any old Super Bowl movie trailer, just another 30-second spot dropping during one of the single most watched sports events of the year. The logo for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company pops up, old footage of Matt Reeves’ 2008 hit Cloverfield begins playing and then we see a man staring out of a window. “10 years ago, some thing arrives,” sayeth a disclaimer. Now that same unknown gent is peering into the mist, as a loud, dull roar echoing nearby. “Find out why.” A quick montage of cosmic debris and chaos ensues. “Whatever you’re doing,” a woman says, looking directly into the camera, “stop.” Hey, that’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the English actress from the Black Mirror episode “San Junipero.” And holy shit, is that, like, a severed arm crawling along a floor? And some sort of international space crew – dotted with a few familiar famous faces – is staring at it? Then … [Read more...] about ‘The Cloverfield Paradox,’ Netflix and the Future of Suckering Moviegoers
Bikram: Yogi, Guru, PredatorDirector - Eva OrnerAt less than an hour-and-a-half long, it’s surprising how much story director Eva Orner packs into her incendiary documentary feature, Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator. It evolves from being an incisive profile of a flamboyant personality to an investigation into allegations of his misconduct; from a tale of brave rebellion to ultimately, a cathartic expose of a charlatan. The film seamlessly blends archival footage with stirring first person testimony for a complex concoction that is just as timely as it is heartbreaking. And unlike most true-crime movies — although it is rather reductive to describe Bikram as such — it ends conclusively.Watch the Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator trailer here Refreshingly, Bikram isn’t the sort of film that allows itself to be swept up in the convoluted contemporary discourse surrounding sexual misconduct, but instead examines the nuanced … [Read more...] about Bikram Yogi, Guru, Predator movie review: Netflix’s spiritual successor to Wild Wild Country is just as wicked
