Volkswagen intends to re-assert itself as builder of the people’s car, now with electric propulsion, so it’s probably fitting that the company plans to do so with rear-drive, rear-motor vehicles -- just like the original Beetle. In the wake of Dieselgate, and maybe partly because of Dieselgate, Germany’s largest car builder is ready to unleash seriously ambitious electrification plans, and not in 10 years nor even five. It all starts next year, and VW expects to sell at least 150,000 plug-in, electric-only vehicles annually by 2020.Hmmm, you might be thinking. Those 150,000 cars sound like a lot, but the total is actually minuscule compared to VW’s annual output of somewhere between 10 and 11 million cars and light trucks a year. And you’d be right. The 150,000 electrics represent just 1.5 percent of VW’s annual production.Yet there’s another thing you could be thinking. No automobile manufacturer -- not BMW nor Nissan nor Chevrolet nor even … [Read more...] about Here’s how Volkswagen plans to turn itself into the world’s largest EV maker

Now playing: Watch this: Lawmakers telling US companies not to buy from Huawei... 5:26 WASHINGTON, D.C.--The House Intelligence Committee released a report this morning, accusing two Chinese makers of telecommunications gear of posing a national security threat and discouraging American businesses from buying their equipment. In a 52-page report, the committee said that neither Huawei or ZTE addressed concerns raised repeatedly by lawmakers over their ability to snoop on American companies or individuals. And neither company was able to convince the committee that they could not be persuaded by the Chinese government to aid its espionage efforts if enlisted to do so. Dubai Image Gallery An aerial view of Dubai's palm island. See more Dubai pictures. Karim Sahib/AFP/Getty Images You can see the flattened palms from space. Their logo-like shapes span Dubai's coastline, providing prime gulf real estate to interested millionaires. Buyers who want a little more space can even purchase their own private islet on an archipelago shaped like a map of the world. Since the 1980s, Dubai has exploded to the forefront of global business and tourism. The ruler of Dubai, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, pursues development as a way to eliminate the emirate's reliance on dwindling oil supplies. But Dubai's geographical setting limits development: It's a small desert state with a coastline only 37 miles long. High-rises and hotels gobbled up Dubai's Persian Gulf coast in the 1990s, creating a wall of buildings. In 1993, construction began on Dubai's first man-made island, the future home of the Burj Al Arab, Dubai's … [Read more...] about Why is the world’s largest artificial island in the shape of a palm tree?
The 1109-carat rough Lesedi La Rona diamond, the biggest rough diamond discovered in more than a century, sits in a display case at Sotheby's on May 4, 2016 in New York City. CNN/Spencer Platt/Getty Images Here's a way to really make a fashion statement, assuming you have several million lying around. Sotheby's will auction off the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond on June 29. It's the largest uncut diamond in the world and the second-largest one ever found. The diamond is about the size of a tennis ball, and has exceptional transparency and clarity, according to the auction house. It was found in Botswana in southern Africa in November 2015, and is expected to fetch $70 million. Estimates place the stone's age between 2.5 and 3 billion years. William Lamb, the CEO of the Lucara Diamond Corporation (which owns the diamond), told the New York Times that they decided to sell it whole, rather than cut it into smaller pieces, because large stones like these have brought record prices … [Read more...] about This One’s More Than Two Months’ Salary: World’s Largest Diamond Up for Auction
Tesla has built the world's largest battery storage system at Hornsdale Wind Farm, near Jamestown in South Australia. Mark Brake/Getty Images Tesla co-founder, chief executive and product architect Elon Musk apparently isn't one to turn down a Twitter challenge. Another company official said publicly in March that Tesla could solve the blackout-plagued Australian state of South Australia's energy woes by installing a massive battery storage system in under 100 days. In response, Australian billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes tweeted back, asking Musk how serious he was about the offer, and whether he could guarantee that it could be accomplished in that time. Musk's reply was to promise that Tesla would get the system installed and working 100 days from the signing of a contract, or else provide it for free. "Is that serious enough for you?" he asked. Blowin' in the Wind After a competitive bidding process that ended in July, the Australians agreed to the deal, and in late September, … [Read more...] about Tesla Installs World’s Largest Battery in Australia
